THE 2024 ALBERTA BREEDERS' FALL CLASSIC

The 28th running of the Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic day was held on Saturday, September 14th at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino near the Edmonton airport. Seven stakes races were held with $350,000 in purse money to showcase the best of the Alberta bred runners.

The Cape Canaveral gelding, J J’S CAPER, captured the Beaufort Stakes for three year olds for owner, Jim Juris. The three year old was bred by James Juris out of the Kahuna Jack mare, Three Jacks, and now has a career record of 11-4-1-1 and $51,773 in earnings.

The Alberta Fall Classic Distaff Handicap for three year old and up Fillies and Mares was handily won by BIG HUG. The Mr. Big mare is owned by Empire Equestrian & Kerredge Farm and was bred by Chalet Stable out of the Unusual Heat mare, Temeeku. The four year old has now earned over US $317,914 and has 13 career wins with a record of 21-13-4-2.

SOLO RING was the winner of the Red Diamond Express Sprint for three year olds and upwards over six furlongs on the dirt. The Where's the Ring gelding is out of the Dr. Adagio mare Drum Solo and and was bred by Peaceful Valley Farms. This win gave the eight year old gelding career earnings of US $197,708 and a record of 34-13-9-3. The 2017 CTHS Alberta sale graduate is owned by Hurley Racing Stable.

The Alberta Breeders’ Handicap for three year olds and up was won for the second consecutive year by SMART PLAY. Smart Play was bred by Pierre Esquirol and Jerri Robertson out of the Smile Again mare, Smile Again Theta. The gelding is owned by Tim Kane, Jerri Robertson, Lesley Hardy and Heather Chieffo. Smart Play has earned over US $135,976 and has a career record of 34-6-9-4.

CTHS Alberta sale graduate, DESTIN TO BE GREAT, claimed a win to add to her record with a victory in the Alberta Oaks for three year old fillies. The Destin filly is a CTHS Alberta sale graduate consigned by Highfield Investment Group and bought by owner Dairen Edwards of Willow Creek Farm. The filly now has career earnings of over US $33,140 and has a record to date of 10-1-1-1.

The Flameaway sired runner SMOKE DADDY was the winner of the Alberta Premier’s Futurity for two year olds. Smoke Daddy was bred by Lori Guhle and is owned by Greystone Farms Ltd. and Lori & John Guhle. Smoke Daddy was third in his first career start and now adds this win to his two year old debut year to earn US $23,837. 

The Fed Biz runner NO MORE LIES won the Sturgeon River Stakes for two year old Alberta bred fillies. No More Lies adds this win to an earlier second place finish in the Princess Margaret Stakes starts this season. The filly is out of the Alberta bred multiple stakes winning mare, Tell Me Lies, and was bred by Bushido Stables. No More Lies is owned by Stetson Inc, Ryan Stetson, Stetson Enterprises and Everblack Cattle Co. Ltd. As of the end of the 2024 race season, No More Lies has US $84,031 in earnings.
